When a member of the family is struggling with substance abuse entire family system suffers. Life within the family system can become a roller coaster of emotions. It is common for parents to blame each other or themselves when their child suffers from an addiction. All family members are affected, the chaos makes addiction in the family unit. Emotions often from denial, sadness, fear, anger, shame and a huge sense of loss.
People are quick to judge someone dependent on drugs or alcohol. They are often stereotyped. For example, the homeless man in the street, drunk at the bar, or a prostitute. People may think that a person addiction to drugs or alcohol is a bad person. This is not true. Addiction is a disease, not caused by being a human being of the good or bad.
An individual dependent on drugs and alcohol may more closely with us than you think
• The young man in a brotherhood who died of an overdose of oxycotin.
• A 16-year-old daughter died of alcohol poisoning after the prom.
• A 15-year-old daughter died of an overdose of heroin in the suburbs.
• A young man of 18 years died of an accidental overdose in her bed.
For these young people, we can hear the following comments: "my children would never take drugs!" Where did he get that? How his parents know? Oxy is just a pain killer how could that kill? It must have been born into a poor family. His family do step care enough attention to his mental health. He probably had problems throughout his life.
I am pleased that my children were not friends with someone like him. What a loser. What kind of College is which? I am pleased my child just drinks and smokes weed! At least my daughter gets just drunk, it is not drugs. My daughter said that she never drinks. My son has too much going for him to consider taking drugs. If she has a drug problem, why does it just stop? This person is simply desire to quit. »
These are examples of people being judgmental without understanding the disease of drug, alcohol and drug addiction. The situation, I want to say is what is happening to the family of the person dealing with substance abuse. Before jumping to conclusions and passing judgments on others, it might be useful educate yourself and look across this painful situation. Drug addiction and alcoholism is a family disease and effectively addressing involves the entire family get an understanding of the disease to treat the issue as a United front. People who are from the drugs and alcohol are generally bright smart people who are unfortunately affected by this cunning baffling and powerful of the disease.
It is important to remember that the people who suffer from substance abuse can get help and learn to live in the recovery. Living in the recovery does not mean that relapse will not occur. Addiction is a disease of long life. If a relapse occurs this individual can fight against drug abuse and be in recovery. In my view, that it is important not to lose hope. It is also essential for the family of a person struggling with the disease of addiction to their lives.
Individual and family therapy can be a useful tool for adaptation and a useful resource in this period difficult. Live with the dependence of the family can be overwhelming. Practice personal care is important for survival. Attending tobacco family group is a way to help the family about this disease. A common saying in tobacco is that it is important to "Place the mask oxygen on yourself first before get you on someone else."
